Western Digital My Passport and updates for Mac My Book

Is it really necessary special disks for Mac? Perhaps the machines with Windows if they need hard drives to read Mac formats, but some time thanks to small software updates (not Apple) hard drives can read NTFS and change in OS X, but this time the discs comes formatted HFS + Journal.
